FLAC is another lossless Codec similar to Apple Lossless. It stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. It will compress, reduce in size, the audio file without any loss in sound quality. It reduces the file size by 50% on average. You can find out more about it here: http://FLAC.sourceforge.net/ To listen to them you'll need a player: http://FLAC.sourceforge.net/links.html#software Foobar is a Windows program but you can run it on your Mac or Linux system. It also works well with playing back FLAC 5.1 surround files. Many of my FLAC 5.1 files are at 96kHz so your system will have to support the sample rate. You'll need a couple of components (plugins), Bass Manager and ASIO, for best results. Read about "bit perfect" to understand why using ASIO or Kernel Streaming is required. Without Bit-Perfect playback, the all audio not at the global samplerate is re-sampled which is why it doesn't sound as good. For example if your Windows computer audio samplerate is set at 44.1kHz and you playback a 96kHz samplerate file, the audio is re-sampled to 44.1kHz. ASIO or Kernel Streaming is required for Bit-Perfect playback. Go Here for running Foobar on a Mac: To listen to 5.1 surround sound files at 96kHz samplerate will require a playback system capable of handling 6 outputs at 96kHz samplerate. There are too many different configurations to mention them here. I'm using an RME-Audio Multiface (ASIO Drivers) connected to 5 full range speakers and a 12 inch subwoofer. If you have a RealTek HD audio system then it's very possible it will work. At some point in the future I will put up info on a few workable configurations. It is probably better for you to figure out what you want, need, and can afford and do it yourself. All of them (except Ambient Life and Trajectories) are at 96kHz samplerate. |
